Father of SAT/AP/TOEFL in China hold a lecture at the IPA
On August 4, 2017 The Independent Preparatory Academy (IPA) of Shenzhen hosted a lecture of its honorary board member, “father of SAT/AP/TOEFL” in China, Dr. Xiang (Bo) Wang. Dr. Wang Xiangbo talked about the most famous American universities and colleges, their admission criteria, and the profile of students they are selecting for the programs.
Xiang (Bo) Wang, Ph.D. is the man who knows international education at its best, as he is the only Chinese national who became the vice president of SAT/ACT, the two college entrance examination institutions in America. Moreover, he was the first man to introduce the freshman admission criteria of American universities -SAT/AP to China, and the first in China who got full marks in TOEFL back in 1983. His children serve an excellent example of his great guidance skills, as his both sons entered The Wharton school of Business with full marks in 16 AP subjects. Recently, he became the teaching supervisor of joint IPA - Shenzhen NO.3 Senior High School program, “Aerospace International Quality plan”.
At his lecture, Dr. Xiang (Bo) shared with Chinese parents and students the story of success of his son Louis Wang, who was an outstanding student starting from elementary school and won numerous awards due to his talents and dedication. In addition to his excellent Academic results, Louis demonstrated high interest in extracurricular activities, and became the journalist and editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, captain of the school science team and the school debate team. At grade 8 Louis received an award for Talented Youth from John Hopkins University, and in 2001 was honored President’s Award for Education Excellence, which was given to him in the White House.
Louis Wang’s great school credentials, and high marks in SAT and AP, lead him to the most prestigious Univerisities in the US: The Wharton School and University of Pennsylvania. Within 4 years Louis successfully graduated from both school with majors in Finance and Material Engineering respectedly. After graduation, he started his career in hedge funds, in Wallstreet, which is really rare for freshly graduates.
Later on, Xiang (Bo) Wang, Ph.D., talked about academic expectations by US Colleges, such as: excellent high school academic achievements, TOEFL/IELTS, SAT/ACT, SAT Subjects, AP, near-native level English, great communication and leadership, critical and global thinking skills. Nowadays, top universities look for students with high personal goals and ambitions to contribute to the advancement of humanities, science and technology, individuals with the sense of integrity and social responsibility. That is why, Dr. Xiang (Bo) Wang encourages all the high school students to participate in different extracurricular activities, such as: model UN, debating, science club, journalism, newspaper editing, literary works, environmental protection, charities, fund raising, volunteering in nursing homes, Red Cross, hospitals, etc.
As the former Vice President of SAT/ACT, Dr. Wang introduced the structure of College Board and its three flagship services: AP, SAT, PSAT. College Board is the institution of the most important admission criteria of American colleges – SAT, which plays a vital role in students applying for colleges in America. AP (Advanced Placement), which courses and tests are counted as college credits, can cut the budget of college education and decrease the college time. SAT and AP are the essential conditions of admission, as well as scholarships in American universities.
At the end of the lecture, Dr. Xiang (Bo) Wang gave an individual consultation to all the interested students and their parents.
